Janis Joplin exuded uninhibited self expression in every performance. She knew that she’d never be satisfied with any other approach.

What’s interesting is that she almost held back in a big way.

After developing a drug problem in California, she moved back to her home town in Texas to get well. At some point she decided that she was going to give up her music, settle down with her boyfriend, go back to school and live a straight life.

But Janis Joplin wasn’t wired to live a straight life. I don’t know if she could’ve ever been happy without the opportunity to express herself the way that she did. Maybe she would’ve lived longer if she gave up her music career. Maybe she wouldn’t have been able to stand the straight life anyway. Who’s to say? One thing’s for sure though, we wouldn’t be talking about her if she hadn’t moved back to California to give it one more shot.

So how are you holding back from being 100% you? How am I? Let’s put the pedal to the metal this week in honor of Janis!

Janis Joplin is iHM’s musician of the week. For more good JJ related stuff be sure to follow on Twitter and Facebook.
